J. Benjamin Stevens

Ben-profile

Talk to a divorce attorney you can trust.

vCard

Aggressive, creative, and compassionate are words Ben Stevens' colleagues freely use to describe him as a divorce and family law attorney. Ben is a Fellow in the prestigious American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, the International Academy of Family Lawyers, and is a Board Certified Family Trial Advocate by the National Board of Trial Advocates. He is one of only four attorneys in South Carolina with those simultaneous distinctions. He is currently the AAML's Technology Director and Newsletter Co-Editor, and he serves on its national Executive Committee.

While Ben is an experienced trial attorney who holds an AV Preeminent Peer Review Rating from Martindale-Hubbell and a perfect 10.0 rating from Avvo, it takes much more than technical proficiency to be an effective family law, child custody lawyer, and divorce attorney. A quality family law and divorce attorney must also be able to understand his clients' problems as well as understand the emotional and human nature of the issues faced by people going through a family crisis. At the same time, however, the best attorneys understand the importance of  navigating the most direct path to a fair resolution of his client's case. Ben possesses a tremendous ability to be simultaneously understanding and effective.

Ben has been featured in numerous publications, including ForbesABA JournalLaw Practice Today,Lawyers USA, South Carolina Lawyers Weekly, NextGen Law, GSA Business, and Mac | Life. He has been interviewed on several television and radio stations, including HuffPost LiveWYFF, WSPA and NPR. Ben has taught continuing legal education seminars to other attorneys all across South Carolina and also in places such as Chicago, Nashville, Orlando, Montreal, and Panama.

Ben developed the South Carolina Bar's Family Law Essentials CLE program, which teaches new attorneys the basics of practicing family law in our state. He is the Chair of the Family Law Council of the South Carolina Bar, and he previously served two terms as the Section Chair for the Family Law Section of the South Carolina Association for Justice and was a member of its Board of Governors for many years. Ben is an active member of the South Carolina Bar, Spartanburg County Bar, American Bar Association, and American Association for Justice.

Ben is a lifelong resident of South Carolina. He graduated with honors from Clemson University with a Bachelor of Science in Financial Management and a minor in Accounting. At Clemson, Ben was an active member of Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity, serving as its chapter President during his Senior year. He then obtained his Juris Doctor degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law, and he has practiced law in Spartanburg, South Carolina ever since. Ben's undergraduate background in business has proved particularly helpful in cases involving complex financial issues.

He is married to his law partner, Jenny R. Stevens, and they have six children between them. Having been previously divorced himself, Ben has a unique insight into the issues people face in Family Court. He and his family are active members of their church and other local organizations. Ben and his family are avid supporters of Clemson University athletics. Having seen Family Court from both sides (as both a divorce attorney and a litigant), Ben has excellent insight into the problems and challenges faced by today's families.
